Eastern Arizona College
Welcome
Welcome to my page regarding Eastern Arizona College where Ignorance is Bliss (“The condition of being uneducated, unaware, or uninformed is extreme happiness.”) that's the administration of Eastern Arizona College at Gila Community College, from the Chancellor, President, Chair's, Deans , Board of Directors and someone known as Darwin Weech who may have perpetrated the best scam of 2009-2010 to date. This letter serves as a wake up letter to students, future students, administrators and those who just might want know like the office of the Arizona Attorney General. Yes, at least one complaint has been filed with the office of the Attorney General of the State of Arizona against Eastern Arizona College and it's fiscal officer Darwin Weech.
I just completed the fall 2009 semester at Eastern Arizona College (EAC) Payson Arizona campus, and currently enrolled for the spring of 2010, after that I will seek another institution of higher learning to complete my studies.
In these economically challenging times, residing in a economically depress and employment challenged community (Payson Arizona) I decided to return to college to obtain another degree in the medical field. I started my basic education requirements and pre requisites at the Payson campus of EAC only to find that this facilities students are being educated by the incompetent, or as they say the blind leading the blind. I don't fault most of the teachers, they are trying their best with the limited resources they have to work with. No my issues is with Mayuree Siripoon Division Chair, Allied Health Allied Health Faculty; I would name the Dean but nobody seems to know who that is this week. EAC for those students taking medical courses at the Payson campus, the administration really sets the students up to fail due to their own laziness or incompetence.
***Submitted for your reading pleasure an article to show you the arrogance and ignorance of Gila Community College. Appears Bob Ashford College Board Chairman (DICKTATOR) was a strong supporter of George W. Bush as Bob follows Dubya's philosophy of "we don't care, cause we don't have too". Click here for article.
Here's a list of my grievances, I tried to address some with the campus Dean, but mostly she was unavailable or we had a scheduling conflict and the Chair could not give a rats permanent vertical smile. I will be attending the next scheduled Board of Directors meeting and ripping all of the board and administrators a new asshole.
1. I'm receiving the PELL grant to attend school, I register for classes, the school and my selected classes are funded through the PELL grant, the remainder of the grant money is to be distributed to the student's (me), why did Eastern Arizona College and Darwin Weech without any notification opens up bank accounts for all the students receiving grants in some shill bank doing business as Higher One, in New Haven Connecticut. Darwin Weech under who's authority do you have permission from to open up these bank accounts? Once the Federal Government (PELL grant) releases funds to the college, the college then holds these funds for 6 weeks or so, gaining interest, before transferring these funds to the students bank accounts (Higher One) two days prior to the start of class. You would think the students would like to purchase textbooks and supplies, more on textbooks forthcoming and not from the grossly overpriced Folletts bookstore. In many legal findings taking someone's funds and holding them beyond a reasonable time and gaining interest on it is considered thievery or larceny. Purchasing our textbooks online usually take 7 to 15 business days to arrive, this guarantees our books arrive after our second week of classes. EAC will I gain any interest on the $1,200 dollars that's rightfully mine? Let me answer that NO!
Now I received a debit card from this shill (Higher One) bank where my funds were transferred too, cash withdrawals are at $3.00 per transaction or greater. Oh and the funny, this bank cannot confirm I'm a U.S. Citizen so they have frozen my funds!!! I've sent them my Drivers License, Passport, Social Security Card and Voters Registration, now they're asking for my utility bills and birth certificate, lasy ass bastards another fiasco brought to you by the George W (Dubya) Bush administration and the Patriot Act. Let's see to obtain the PELL grant I had to be a U.S. citizen, to attend college I had to be a U.S. citizen.Oh Well - Easy Come - Easy Go.
Textbooks the schools 2009-2010 course catalog we are provided a description of the course available. Within this catalog there are hyperlinks to take yo to the course description which are all incorrect. Wrong instructor, wrong materials required, especially the textbooks. When looking for the textbook the course description provides the name, author(s) and publisher, and textbook edition, no ISBN number. Here we are our second day into the Spring 2010 classes and all our textbooks we have are the wrong edition per the instructor (money down the drain). Because I knew of the incompetence of this college, I telephoned the Payson college office on January 4, 2010 to confirm what textbooks and editions which were required. I ordered what I was told. THE BLIND LEADING THE BLIND
FUNNY or SAD? Starting this Spring semester the administration over scheduled the classrooms, now we will meet at other facilities which can change weekly for my Monday, Wednesday and Thursday classes. After completing our 1st class on Monday's and Wednesday's we'll now have 10 minutes to negotiate our way to wherever our next traveling classroom will be.
2.Who at EAC actually oversees the Deans and Chairs to make sure they are doing their jobs correctly? Just because you have an MBA or Ph.D. who's to say your not slacking? Case in point, in our recently completed final exams, in one class the final exam was written in 1999, yes remember the Millennium? Our class textbook was copyrighted in 2009, Chair and Dean, you know how many wrong answers you had on our exam? Do you care?
Numerous. I'm glad I stayed after class to see my test score after being sent through the scantron, I was able to get my incorrect answers overturned, this not only helped me, but the 30 plus other students in the class.
3. I know for a fact one of my instructors upon receiving the class final exam from EAC sent it back to the Dean because the answers were outdated and wrong! YES medical information and procedures change around every two (2) years and this instructor would not administer the test as written with the answers provided by the Dean and Chair. Hello!
4. Who evaluates the instructors or anybody with a degree can teach? Take Phlebotomy in Payson please. This person is no more qualified to teach this class than Charles Manson. Her overall attitude towards the students is general malcontent. A typical answer from this instructor is “it’s in your textbook – read it” you ask where? "between the front cover and the back cover" or “we don’t do that here in Payson” no wonder the Payson Regional Medical Center has such low approval ratings and is always in litigation. You also need to review your course design http://www.eac.edu/Academics/wids/HCE186.pdf
HCE 186
Phlebotomy and Clinical Laboratory
2 credits Offered upon request
The study of accurate, up to date, practical information and instruction in phlebotomy procedures and techniques, along with a comprehensive background in phlebotomy theory and principles. Skills include drawing blood, obtaining blood cultures, using Lancet or a Microlance for a Microdraw or an Infant Heel Stick, and measuring bleeding time. This course requires successful invasive draws including 6 draws using vacutainer system, 4 draws using butterfly system, and 4 fingersticks. For students intending to take the National Certification Exam, the requirement is 50 successful draws.
I failed to see these other items prior to enrolling, this is what the instructor tells us:
The last sentence states only 50 draws are required, yet to be eligible for national certification, as listed on the sheet given to us by the instructor, states a student must complete 120 clinical hours, 100 successful draws and 50 capillary draws. As shown by the course description, the additional course-related issues not listed are detailed as follows:
1. 120 clinical hours. This requirement is nearly impossible to meet during one semester. We were informed by the instructor that once the semester is over, 12/17/2009, we can no longer receive clinical hours at the hospital. We also have no other options/contacts for clinical hours to participate at.
2. Medical - Personal History forms. We have received packets that must be completed and returned to the instructor in order to participate in clinical hours. This should have been listed in order to expedite our ability to participate in clinical hours. This could have been completed before the start of the fall semester if it would have been known to the student.
3. Doctor’s physical - drug screen. This out-of-pocket expense to the student is upwards of $200 depending on insurance co-pays. This is another requirement in addition to the history forms in order to participate in clinical hours that is not listed.
4.Criminal background check. This is also an out-of-pocket expense incurred on the student and costs the student $65 also a fee of $5 to $15 for fingerprinting. The background check is completed through the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZ DPS) and takes weeks to receive. This also could have been listed in order to expedite our ability to participate in clinical hours.
Each of the above mentioned issues pertain to one important aspect of the class- national certification. While the state of Arizona does not require a phlebotomist to be nationally certified, having the certificate would allow the student an opportunity to seek employment as a phlebotomist. We were informed by the instructor that the PRMC hospital would not hire additional phlebotomists. This can change, depending on staffing, but with current economic conditions having a certification is of the utmost importance. Almost weekly the instructor states there are no jobs here (Payson). This statement alone true or false is not what any teacher tells a student.
This is important to many students in the class. Many students are seeking a career in the medical field and require some type of medical experience to move on. Phlebotomy is also a course requirement for certain medical education fields, such as nuclear medicine technologist for which I am interested in. The issue of financial obligations to this course should have been disclosed through the Gila Community College description/disclosure catalog. Many students are on fixed incomes, only receive a certain amount of financial aid, or are enrolled in several classes. This financial burden should not be forced on the student after the semester has begun.
Another issue I have with this course and instructor is that since the first day of class the students have been receiving many documents from the college or Payson Regional Medical Center during the weeks by the instructor to be completed by our personal doctors. None of this is mentioned anywhere within the course catalog or course design. We the students need to provide our Inoculation or Immunization records or obtain a Titer, indicating our immunization to Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varivax, Hepatitis B, Tuberculosis, Urine drug screen and a Department of Public Safety fingerprint screening, and submit to a physical exam. These above mentioned items are at a greatly incurred cost to the students. These costs provided by a for profit medical doctor and laboratory are at a great cost, which is something the college completely neglected to inform the students prior to enrollment of this additional financial burden.
A prerequisite should also be put in place for this course such as Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology or some other HCE/BIO related course. These courses will assist the student in the minimal time allowed for the class when the lecture covers advanced systems such as the circulatory, pulmonary and lymphatic systems.
